Tonghai Park

Discover Tonghai Park, which blends science and technology along the coastal edge of Yazhou Bay in China—an article by Chengdu MaiWei Landscape Architecture Studio.

Located in the Yazhou District of Sanya, Hainan Province, the site borders the coastline of Yazhou Bay and connects to the central park of the Sanya Deep-Sea Science and Technology City. The project covers 1.2 hectares and aims to create a child-friendly urban park that combines ecological preservation with everyday functionality, becoming a key node within the region’s green infrastructure.

The design preserves the site’s natural character, including wetland vegetation, wild grasses, and ecological shorelines. Under the concept of a “fluid boundary with nature,” the project integrates free-form shapes and curved circulations to dissolve spatial edges and encourage immersive experiences within the park.

The landscape strategy focuses on three aspects: ecology, age inclusivity, and artistic expression. Green infrastructure is implemented through wetland restoration, stormwater infiltration systems, and native planting. Permeable pavements and undulating topography reduce hard surfaces and improve user comfort. Primary paths and rest areas are set at appropriate elevations to remain usable during periods of high tide, introducing flexibility in both spatial and ecological performance.

Spatially, the park is divided into several experiential zones tailored to different age groups. Inspired by islands and the movement of tides, the sculpted terrain forms mounds and playful reliefs that subtly guide the user’s journey. Boundaries between functions are softened through topographic transitions, allowing views, rhythms, and atmospheres to change as visitors move through the site. The result is a dynamic yet grounded public space that fosters interaction between community life and natural systems.
