Ordos Smart Sports Park
Join us to get to know the Ordos Smart Sports Park, which seeks to be a public space that integrates technology to improve the user experience.
An urban square park is renovated into a comprehensive sports park with open territory in Ordos, China; in the 19.7-hectare area, there are three runways for different groups and abundant ball courts for soccer, basketball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, and gate-ball. The center of the site posits new architecture that blends the kids’ playground and park service management center with a roof lookout.
The Ordos spread over 87 thousand square kilometers, including the desert, steppe, and river context. Translating this unique and coexisting landscape into a spatial experience in the park is the core idea of responding to the locals. Micro-terrain outlines the dunes’ shape; grassland as the steppe elements became the background, and runway curves in a river trace.
Grouped by age and habit of exercise, the five arrays in different functions came out. The comprehensive ball courts areas, which satisfy the multiple activity scenes for training or games; the kids’ playground in the core of Park; the bike field for teenagers; the fitness area for elders; a new gate ball stadium for some professional games; the alkaline soil area which is not available to planting is used to a seasonal place, a sand pits area in summer and skating tracks in winter; a new water pool and gesture-based fountain that could flourish the activity with water in Park.
The building façade assembled some recreational equipment for kids, and the inside contains an office, sports store, shop, café, and restroom. The semi-open corridor and the vertical shade surface strengthen the transparency and connection between people.
The parkland mainly features woodland pasture in the Ordos, allowing some human-scale leisure activities in the grassland. Landscape designers keep the original tall arbor trees well-growing and remove the messy bottom bush that obstructs the sight of open surroundings. This transparent landscape layer keeps a connection with people and nature. Furthermore, new native plant species with original Populus alba, Pinus sylvestris, and Chinese Willow are helping to grow a local plant ecosystem.
The shading system keeps one design language. Besides the natural tree shelters, membrane structure pavilions are positioned in different places, providing a comfortable resting area along the tracks, and an encounter space in a walkway to help care for kids, which applies to diverse scenes. Those pavilions with curved ridge lines keep out the sun and respond to the dunes in the Ordos.
The park stands out with its unique approach to operating and interacting with people through an intelligent management platform. This platform has given birth to five distinct smart fields: smart health, smart jogging loop, smart sports, smart life, and smart lighting systems. These smart scenes are about technology and integrating ecology, environment, and maintenance into an intelligence network. This network is designed to provide personalized and sustainable services, setting a new standard for foreseeing planning.
The park stands out with its unique approach to operating and interacting with people through an intelligent management platform.
The intelligence landscape facilities include:
- Analyze the fitness data and personalize a fitness plan.
- Smart jogging loop combines application and traffic monitoring.
- Smart jogging loop assembled facilities along the runway such as interactive screen, lighting, direct water, etc.
- Gestured fountains and interacted projections blend into daily leisure life.
- Smart navigation matches with the VI system.
- Water purifier system.
- Charging is based on solar energy and intelligent storage, assembled in the outdoor furniture.
- Controlled lighting for diverse scenes.
The health of habitats focuses on water circulation and using green materials. The site follows the original terrain with a difference in height, sets an introduced route for streams and penetrated materials, gathers waters into marshland, and finally maintains a balance of water in the park.
Since its opening in August 2023, the park has attracted thousands of locals and visitors and hosted many matches in the fields, from football to gateball. The kids’ playground achieved many favorites. Under the control of a strict budget, the park led a trend toward a healthy lifestyle and allowed the public green space to return to everyone’s routines.
