{"id":15278,"date":"2020-06-12T12:24:16","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T17:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.landuum.com\/?p=15278"},"modified":"2020-07-13T17:13:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T22:13:32","slug":"nathan-phillips-square-revitalization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.landuum.com\/en\/interventions\/nathan-phillips-square-revitalization\/","title":{"rendered":"Nathan Phillips Square Revitalization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Viljo Revell\u2019s Toronto City Hall (1965) and its civic plaza, Nathan Phillips Square (NPS), are an integrated and iconic expression of Modernism. <!--more-->However, subjected to budget cuts, NPS was not constructed with the careful execution that characterizes City Hall, and much of its potential was left unrealized. Open the Square \u2013 remove clutter at the centre (including a temporary stage and a Peace Garden that had been added in the 1980s) to accommodate all kinds of large gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>2. Create programmed, porous, landscaped \u201cgreen rooms\u201d around the perimeter to frame the square and provide smaller gathering spaces for individuals and groups.<\/p>\n<p>3. Create new connections between the existing raised walkway and the square, and activate these spaces that feed the programming of the square.<\/p>\n<p>4. All new structures are multi-purpose. When not in use for performances, the glass-canopied, terraced form of the stage provides covered public space and casual seating; its stairs connect the raised walkway to the square.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the revitalization, City Hall\u2019s podium was a paved void that had long been closed off to the public. White-barked birches and the colour palette of the flowering plants reflect the theme of peace. Linear masses of plantings interwoven with seating and crushed granite paths reinforce the layered effect of the stepped planes \u2013 allowing those seated to be part of planting nooks within the larger whole.<\/p>\n<p>The diverse collections of grasses, flowers and evergreen deciduous shrubs ensure year-round interest within the cascade of stairs. At the west, birches bracket the garden toward the Law Society of Upper Canada and the lane now closed to vehicular traf\ufb01c, creating a permeable screen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15274\"
